  • Folliculitis (in-growing hairs)

  • Hormonal disturbances

  • Gender reassignment

Treatment time

This varies according to the area treated with small areas including the top lip taking only minutes to complete. Larger areas can take 1-2 hours.

Recovery Time

There is no recovery time following Laser or IPL hair removal treatments. Any redness can be easily covered with makeup and patients can go back to their normal activities immediately.

Results Duration

If the area to be treated is considered a ‘normal’ hair growth and not one associated with illness or disease, then results can last for many years. We have been treating patients for over 15 years, many of which have not needed any further treatment.

FAQS

How does Laser and IPL work?

Laser and IPL hair removal can treat hair all over the body as long as the hair has colour. The hairs that respond best to treatment are thicker, darker hairs and for fine ‘downy’ hairs we use a treatment called ‘Hair V Go.’ The light generated from the Laser and IPL is pulsed into the skin and absorbed by the dark hairs. The hairs are destroyed by the heat of the light and will fall out after 2-3 weeks. Because the hair grows in cycles, several sessions will be needed, with the average being 4-8 sessions. The time between treatments is normally 8-16 weeks.

Which areas can be treated with Laser and IPL hair removal?

Almost all areas of the skin that grow hair can be treated with only a few exceptions. We treat men and women over the age of 16 years. The skin must be free of tan (from the sun and sun beds) and fake tan.

Does the treatment hurt?

The treatment has been described like an elastic band ‘flicking’ onthe skin. The tip of the treatment head has an advanced chiller, which cools the skin immediately before the light is pulsed into the skin, making the treatment very comfortable. For our more sensitive patients we do have many other pain management options and aim to make it as comfortable as possible.

How does my natural skin and hair colour affect the results of the treatment?

The patients that respond best to Laser and IPL hair removal are those that have lighter skin and thick, dark hair and they are also less at risk from side effects. Darker skin types may not be suitable for treatment with the equipment we have, however this would be assessed at the consultation along with alternative options. Patients with fine, light-coloured hair will also not be suitable for this treatment.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Before your Laser/IPL hair removal treatment with us, we will perform a patch test. This is for safety reasons and also allows us to assess the results, so we can ensure that subsequent treatments are successful. We would then ask for you to return a week later for an assessment and this can be followed by the full treatment. The patch test and treatments can only be completed on skin that has not recently been exposed to the sun, sunbeds and fake tan. We also ask patients to leave the hair 2-3 mm in length so we can fully assess if the treatment is going to be successful. On subsequent visits patients can shave the area so no need for embarrassing growth periods as is required for electrolysis and waxing.

During the treatment anybody in the treatment room is asked to wear special protective safety goggles. The hair to be treated is shaved and the area marked out in white pencil. Patients are asked to check that the area outlined will ensure that all the hairs they want treated will be included. A special cold gel is then applied to the area and the light applied. Once the area has been treated the gel is removed.

Once the areas have been treated a special cream will be applied to soothe the area and patients leave with no visible signs of treatments so they can go back to their normal routines straight away. We ask that patients don’t go straight into the sun or have hot baths or heat treatments for 24 hours following the treatment.

Typically the hair growth is stunted for 2-5 days following the treatment and then between day 5 and 14 the hairs drop out. Treatments are normally spaced 8-12 weeks apart.
